| Playwright's Note in the Original Program... |
I originally started college at Wichita State University majoring in saxophone performance. After a tragic car accident, resulting
in the death of a good friend, I left WSU and came to the University of Kansas where I eventually found a place for myself in the English Department doing creative writing. For students interested in playwriting, all roads lead to Paul Stephen Lim and the English Alternative Theatre. After completing both the Playwriting I and II courses offered by the English Department,
I was granted the opportunity to work in a directed study with Professor Lim, who guided me during the writing process of An Army of One.
I would now like to dedicate the play's script to all veterans and currently active soldiers in all branches of the United States Military, especially those veterans and their families, who have endured the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder--in particular a Marine reservist named Jeffrey Lucey, who was the subject of an article titled, "Battling the Effects of War," in the November 28, 2004, issue of Newsweek. His story inspired me while writing this play, and I regret that he will never get to see this production.
I would also like to thank the following people for their individual and collective contributions to my creative growth: Paul Stephen Lim, Paul Hough, Pam McComas, Craig Bennett, Anna Riphahn, all my friends, family, and Mary. |
